Crash (1996)
Country: CAN
Technical: col 100m
Director: David Cronenberg
Cast: James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, Rosanna Arquette
Synopsis:
A yuppie couple spice up their sex life via meetings with an eccentric acquaintance who reconstructs the fatal car wrecks of the rich and famous.
Review:
Controversial filming of J. G. Ballard's notorious novel, in which society's obsession with the motor car is seen to have morbidly erotic dimensions. The release provoked some outcry among councils in the UK but was passed uncut. It is all entirely in keeping with this director's abiding concerns, the cast gamely take risks with their craft, and it pretty much does what it says on the bodywork. As filmed drama it is only fitfully satisfying, but fans of dystopian Sci-Fi and kinky erotica will find plenty to engross.
