El crimen de Cuenca (1980)
(The Cuenca Crime)
Country: SP
Technical: Eastmancolor 92m
Director: Pilar Miró
Cast: Amparo Soler Leal, Héctor Alterio, Daniel Dicenta
Synopsis:
A hawker tells the story of how, in Cuenca in the 1910s, two innocent peasants were arrested and tortured by the Guardia Civil, for the murder of a body found in the river.
Review:
Powerful record of an infamous miscarriage of justice in the province of Cuenca; the film was so shocking, whether in its picking over of old wounds or in its excruciating torture sequences, or both, that it was a year or two before it could be shown in Spain, the director actually being arrested and arraigned before a military court. It should be stressed that both the events depicted and the production of the film itself fell outside the Franco period.
