Les carabiniers (1963)

£0.00

Country: FR/IT
Technical: bw 85m
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Cast: Albert Juross, Marino Masé, Catherine Ribeiro, Geneviève Galéa, Barbet Schroeder

Synopsis:

Gypsies are enlisted by carabinieri to fight in a war, with the promise of plunder to bring back home to their women. They learn how to kill and appreciate a wide range of themed picture postcards.

Review:

The first part of this anti-war tract is a bit creakier than usual but otherwise pretty typical of the Godard of that time; after that it gets decidedly modern, so much so that it ceases to make much sense to anyone beyond the basic idea that war is waged by the proletariat on behalf of capitalism, which we knew anyway.
