The film posits a world in which the endlessly repeated Cabin in the Woods narrative is actually an elaborately orchestrated reality show, whose function is to appease the titan-like gods buried, but barely restrained, below ground.
Review:
The viewer can be forgiven for thinking there has been some mix up with the reels, as he is presented with two men in suits laughing and joking about their ordinary lives, while a situation familiar from countless films, in particular The Evil Dead, unfolds before his eyes. How well the makers keep us simultaneously engaged and detached from the predicament of our two-dimensional teens is a moot point, and the concept is nowhere near as smart as they would like to think, as any Doctor Who geek will tell you. However, for a Hollywood horror pic it does at least have a conspicuous sense of fun and the apocalyptic finale is delivered with the requisite degree of chutzpah. Quite why there would be a big red button marked 'Purge' is anyone's guess, rather like the one in Bride of Frankenstein: 'Don't pull that lever!'
