The Carey Treatment (1972)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 101m
Director: Blake Edwards
Cast: James Coburn, Jennifer O'Neill
Synopsis:
A doctor at a Boston hospital tries to defend a friend and colleague accused of performing a fatal abortion on the daughter of the Chief of Staff. His investigations lead him to suspect blackmail and foul play.
Review:
It is easy to tag a film as pretentious when it tackles a topical issue (and a controversial one) within a conventional genre framework. The dialogue in this case does not, as Halliwell states, go for moral points but simply raises them. As a suspense thriller it works up to quite a climax in a hospital, anticipating Halloween 2 by ten years.
