(The Centre of the World)

Country: US
Technical: col 88m
Director: Wayne Wang
Cast: Molly Parker, Peter Sarsgaard, Carla Gugino, Alisha Klass, Balthazar Getty

Synopsis:

A computer consumer and stockmarket hawk takes a few days off work to enjoy unconsummated sex with a stripper in, of all places, a Vegas hotel. The parameters of the contract prove hard to maintain.

Review:

Shot on DVD to obtain the requisite semblance of arty innovation, this unavoidably sleazy scenario is partly redeemed through its concentration on the acting and clear wish to examine the emotions of both solitary participants. However generous and galant Richard might be, he is still paying for sex and therefore degrading Florence and, more importantly, their relationship. What the film never quite makes explicit is the idea that American culture is founded on the cash transaction as a route to fulfilment, and there is a certain amount of coy flirtation with the exposability of its chosen subject matter as screened entertainment.
