The Cider House Rules (1999)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 125m
Director: Lasse Hallström
Cast: Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Michael Caine, Jane Alexander, Kate Nelligan, Delroy Lindo

Synopsis:

In the 1940s a boy who has grown up in an orphanage under the tutelage of the resident obstetrician ventures out to the coast of Maine to discover that in life, as in the orphanage, the rules are broken from time to time.

Review:

Fitting into its director's body of work in featuring children (a shade more angelic than usual) and possessing a free-spirited disregard for convention, the film offers little beyond this and will probably be remembered for its benign abortions more than anything. (This would not be so bad if the general look of the film were less sanitised - rarely can so many clean-faced orphans and migrant workers have been seen in a movie drama.) The title refers to the obscure and totally ignored set of rules posted in the house where the hero lodges with negro workers as an apple picker.
