The Contender (2000)

£0.00

Country: GER/US/GB
Technical: Foto-Kem 126m
Director: Rod Lurie
Cast: Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges, Gary Oldman, William Petersen, Sam Elliott

Synopsis:

Approaching the end of his term, the Democrat president prepares to select a new vice-president; his choice of a woman for the job leads to a sleaze campaign to undermine her.

Review:

Extremely well written political drama; a fascinating insight into the corridors of power which just about avoids the Capra effect in its rousing final scene thanks to the sobriety of what has gone before. Superb performances from Oldman (barely recognisable) and Allen, but it is Bridges who stands out as a fine, maturing screen presence.
