Damsels in Distress (2011)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 99m
Director: Whit Stillman
Cast: Greta Gerwig, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Analeigh Tipton

Synopsis:

Three roommates at a high-end university campus take in a sophomore student out of charity, and school her in the subtle arts of survival. These include courting intellectually inferior frat house denizens while avoiding contact with their body odour, and offering suicide preventative nourishment to others disappointed in love.

Review:

Helmed by the absurd but endearing aloofness of Gerwig's Violet, Stillman's long delayed return to the screen is a uniquely whimsical look at the rarefied attitudes of a particular social set in an academic context where study scarcely ever rears its head as a topic of conversation. Irritatingly, the actresses' diction is not always clear, partly through their adoption of preppy modes of speech, and is masked by a wholly unnecessary and intrusive music track. However, the running highlight of the movie is Megalyn Echikunowke's use of the phrase 'playboy oper-a-tor' in an affected London accent.
