Synopsis:
Homeward to a remote river community comes the son of the local publican. In short order he moves into his late father's shack among the reeds, sets about building a riverhouse and takes in his sister, much to the disapproval of the stepfather and other locals.
Review:
The film might have been called The Homecoming, but its title stands as an index of its artistic 'obliqueness'. With longish shot lengths reminiscent of the more roving cameras of fellow countrymen Tarr and Janscó, the script's sustained silences (the dialogue could be written on the back of postcard) and pregnant looks almost make this a parody of what Sight & Sound dubbed the new 'slow cinema'. However, there is enough formal beauty here, particularly in the scenes by and on the river, and the siblings' love has a discretion and simplicity about it that recall Bresson.
