Despair (1978)

£0.00

Country: GER/FR
Technical: Eastmancolor 119m
Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Cast: Dirk Bogarde, Andrea Ferreol, Klaus Löwitsch

Synopsis:

A Russian émigré chocolatier during the dying days of the Weimar Republic begins to worry about his Jewish roots and, spotting a tramp who looks just like him, conceives of a plot to do away with him and take his place.

Review:

A Nabokov source novel and a wordy Tom Stoppard script combined with the director's poor ear for English to produce an over-elaborate dud in his increasingly aestheticized output; this despite another strong appearance from Bogarde in a European production, his last before These Foolish Things (1990).
