Destroyer (2018)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 121m
Director: Karyn Kusama
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, Jade Pettyjohn
Synopsis:
A jaded LAPD detective receives evidence that a former mark, whose operation she had infiltrated years previously as an undercover officer, is again active. She proceeds to work her way through all her contacts from that period until she finds a way to him, whereupon she can close the book and make peace with her past.
Review:
The story of a peace officer making a fatal error of judgement has been handled in all sorts of ways before (The Offence, The Prowler) but rarely with a female lead and not so often with a jumbled chronology as here (the closest to that is perhaps Angel Heart). However, if you can get past the tricksy narrative and unclear dialogue, the heart of this film is Kidman's performance as the beat-up, hungover, self-lacerating Erin.
