Destry Rides Again (1939)
Country: US
Technical: bw 94m
Director: George Marshall
Cast: James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, Brian Donlevy, Charles Winninger
Synopsis:
The town of Bottleneck is run by a card sharp land-grabber, who dispatches the sheriff and appoints a drunk in his place. The latter determines to go on the wagon and sends for the son of the great lawman Destry to act as his deputy. But the new Destry has renounced his guns and proceeds to establish law and order by other means.
Review:
A unique sort of charm permeates this tragi-comic western so that it has become something of a classic, though it is anything but typical. There are musical numbers very much built around Dietrich's by now self-parodic Germanic portamento, and the action is loud and knockabout. In fact it is not dissimilar to what might have transpired if Preston Sturges had been let loose on the genre. However, Stewart is on splendid pre-war form, and few will forget Winninger's pulling out of his own shirt in moments of disarray.
