Donovan's Reef (1963)
Country: US
Technical: col 108m
Director: John Ford
Cast: John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Elizabeth Allen, Jack Warden
Synopsis:
A US soldier stays behind on a South Sea island after WW2 to found a shipping company, building around him a tropical paradise - on his terms.
Review:
Kind of a John Ford El Dorado, seeming equally dated and somewhat tireder in the sixties, but some of the cheer is communicated and only the director could pull off quite this mix of clowning and sentiment with themes of white supremacy, greed and bigotry that were dealt with far more seriously, and less successfully, the year before in Diamond Head! Ideal rainy Sunday afternoon entertainment.
