Duck Soup (1933)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 68m
Director: Leo McCarey
Cast: Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, Margaret Dumont, Louis Calhern

Synopsis:

The president of Freedonia provokes a declaration of war from neighbouring Sylvania to secure the favours of a wealthy, matronly socialite.

Review:

Perhaps the best Marx Brothers film, this is a breathless succession of lines, gags and routines with almost no attempt at what might be termed a plot. A feast of wordplay and surreal imagery, it is one of the most anarchic entertainments to come out of the old Hollywood. Standout sequences include Edgar Kennedy's lemonade salesman, Groucho and Chico mimicking each other through a full-length 'mirror', and Harpo finding a blonde who will take him and his horse. The songs are cod Gilbert and Sullivan but there are no solo musical interludes.
