The Descendants (2011)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 115m
Director: Alexander Payne
Cast: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Beau Bridges, Michael Ontkean

Synopsis:

A Hawaii lawyer watches over his comatose wife, struggles with his unruly ten year-old daughter and confronts a decision on the sale of acres of paradisial real estate with which his family has been entrusted for decades; but the return from school of his seventeen year-old foulmouthed and drug-abusing elder daughter reveals even more for him to come to terms with.

Review:

A film about how personal tragedy can remove the blinkers from a man's eyes, allowing him to spend time with his kids (the final shot says it all) and make the right decisions in his public life. The title encapsulates at once the status of privilege occupied by the Kings, and the duty of trust placed upon Matt, both in regard to his children and the community. Few US films have dealt in such detail with the geography and society of the Hawaiian isles. Through a series of close-ups in tandem with Clooney's typically sincere performance, Payne lays out the bewilderment, anger and gradual apprehension of this man trying to make sense of the hand he has been dealt.
