The Descent (2005)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 99m
Director: Neil Marshall
Cast: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Saskia Mulder

Synopsis:

One year after a fatal accident in which she loses her husband and daughter, an extreme sports enthusiast travels to the Appalachians with her buddies to do some potholing. There her own traumatised state and her friends' recklessness lead them into a lethal encounter with atavistic aggression.

Review:

Gifted with a decent budget, Marshall's second horror after Dog Soldiers is an altogether more assured affair, with more convincingly staged shocks and kills and generally better acting. What with the limited light source underground, and the highly 'edited' one-on-ones, it is often hard to see what is going on, but copious opportunities for suspense and terror in the cramped confines are effectively availed. The suggestion that the 'crawlers' are in fact manifestations of the protagonist's id also affords welcome ambiguity, and the film quickly became a Brit horror classic.
