The Devil's Backbone (2001)
(El espinazo del diablo)
Country: SP/MEX
Technical: col 108m
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Marisa Paredes, Eduardo Noriega, Federico Luppi, Fernando Tielve
Synopsis:
In the closing stages of the Spanish Civil War a boy arrives at an orphanage run by one-legged headmistress, attended by the doctor who loves her and the odd job man cum former pupil who ministers to her sexual needs. The presence of the ghost of a murdered pupil makes itself felt and all appears to hinge on a cache of Loyalist gold and a mysterious pool beneath the kitchen.
Review:
Curious mixture of history and the supernatural which achieves several flesh-creeping moments before resolving itself into a fight for survival against the forces of evil still very much alive. Superbly produced cinema which, along with The Others, showed a certain Spanish proficiency in the realm of the uncanny.
