The Dressmaker (1988)
Country: GB
Technical: col 91m
Director: Jim O'Brien
Cast: Joan Plowright, Billie Whitelaw, Jane Horrocks
Synopsis:
Two sisters in wartime Liverpool have very differing attitudes towards life, which affects their niece's experience of love with a G.I.
Review:
The kid's nationality is pretty much incidental, so another Yanks this ain't; more important is the arbitrariness with which character is seen to be acquired through exposure to given influences. A Grand Guignol climax leaves one unsure as to the makers' intentions, however.
