The Detective (1968)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 114m
Director: Gordon Douglas
Cast: Frank Sinatra, Lee Remick, Jacqueline Bisset, Jack Klugman, Ralph Meeker

Synopsis:

A Manhattan detective finds the old givens no longer apply: his investigation into a homosexual murder case reveals bigotry on the force and corruption at the highest levels, pressure for self-advancement leads to sloppy decision making, and his wife who loves him cannot stop herself sleeping with other men.

Review:

A good cop movie in the modern, frank style (cf. Bullitt), with its star at his best. The time scale is a little unclear, as are the back projections in the driving scenes, and the handling of homosexuality seems strident now, but at the time this was bold, adult film-making with the emphasis on character rather than policing. Remick is also excellent.
