The Devil at 4 O'Clock (1961)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 126m
Director: Mervyn LeRoy
Cast: Spencer Tracy, Frank Sinatra, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Grégoire Aslan, BarBara Luna

Synopsis:

A plane transporting prisoners makes a stopover at a Polynesian island so that the priest can be relieved by his successor, but the latter has a lot to learn in little time, especially since the island's volcano is about to have its own say.

Review:

Archetypal assorted characters in extremis jamboree with all clichés in place: drunken priest who has lost his faith (check), irredeemable cons who turn into self-sacrificing convertees (check), blind half-caste beauty who has never kissed a man before (check), a hospital full of children in need of rescue - by parachute! Need I go on? Some of the masters look spectacularly impressive, especially of the volcano, until, that is, they are followed by a process shot. LeRoy meanwhile handles the sanctimonious dialogue and unconvincing studio interiors as if nothing had changed in thirty years.
