Elysium (2013)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 109m
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Cast: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura

Synopsis:

Los Angeles, 2154: while the planet groans under the pressures of overpopulation, a luxury space station provides the paradisial delights of a California past, for those with the means to pay for it.

Review:

Centring around a slum boy and his dreams of escape to Elysium, this has echoes from King Arthur to Total Recall, but links with Blomkamp's previous film about undesirable aliens, District 9, is what saves it. There is a strong Latino cast and one could almost allegorize Elysium as Donald Trump's famous wall, were the film not to have predated that. Damon again proves himself more than a he-man, kicking ass even when poisoned with radiation and having a metal frame drilled into his bones, but all the cast do well. It is the science bit that finally disappoints: what, after all, provides the atmosphere and gravity for the Elysium dwellers?
