Emilia Pérez (2024)
Country: FR/BEL
Technical: col/2.35:1 132m
Director: Jacques Audiard
Cast: Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz
Synopsis:
A Mexico City lawyer, tired of the corruption surrounding the criminal cases she prepares, agrees to nurse a drug lord through gender reassignment, but when (s)he insists on being reunited with his kids complications set in.
Review:
Redemptive drama with musical asides, somewhat in the manner of Annette (2021, q.v.), whose controversial contention was that to become a better person first become a woman (or, as some cartel leaders no doubt took it, that they and their like were simply frustrated transsexuals making the world suffer for their unhappiness!) Alas, having potentially offended Mexicans, the film was then swamped in negative publicity over Ms Gascón's less than 'woke' social media pronouncements. While it is hard to recognise the film's musical pretensions as anything more than a Brechtian gimmick, there is enough in the performances and cinematography to provide food for both eye and brain. 13 Oscar nominations, however, is perhaps going it some.
