Synopsis:
Two men load and fire a cannon from the roof of a tall building; two more play chess briefly; a hunter is shot from the parapet and his funeral becomes a helter-skelter chase through the Paris boulevards.
Review:
Just some of the absurd events depicted in this early Surrealist piece of vaguely anti-aristocratic sentiment. The Italian Straw Hat-style cortège that occupies the second half goes on a bit, but elsewhere Clair includes double exposure, under and over-cranking, and other filmic tricks and devices, like the phantom ride on a rollercoaster. Satie provided the music, and the film was presented between the acts of a ballet, hence the upskirted ballerina shots. In 1962 it was reissued with a soundtrack.
