Like its over-dressed leading character, what appears at first to be a WYSIWYG creation of little intellectual depth is almost at once revealed to be much more than that. Leaving the inescapable spectacle of Miss Roberts's enhanced cleavage aside, the rhythm of the film, the naturalistic tenor of the dialogue (for the most part avoiding one-liners) and the unostentatious playing of roles ripe for sentimental exploitation mark the film out as another subtle piece of genre-twiddling from this most sensitive of directors.
