L'ennui (1998)
Country: FR
Technical: col 122m
Director: Cédric Kahn
Cast: Charles Berling, Sophie Guillemin, Arielle Dombasle
Synopsis:
Having been separated from his wife for six months a university lecturer becomes as intolerant of himself as he is bored by others, and embarks on a torrid affair with an artist's model who bores him even more. However, when he tries to break the relationship she turns the tables and he finds her to be the sole meaning of his existence.
Review:
The obsessive aspects of amour fou have been examined many times before in films, especially French ones (L'Enfer, Un Amour de Swann), but rarely has the hero been so lucid about his predicament and so entertainingly capable of talking endlessly about it. His incessant questions to the unresponsive Cecilia remind one of Rohmer's characters in monologue; it is a splendid performance from Berling and maintains the interest in an otherwise repetitive scenario (there is a great deal of sex).
