The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 124m
Director: Irvin Kershner
Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Synopsis:

The Empire pursues the Alliance to a snowbound planet and Luke and his friends take flight in contrasting directions, Solo to link up with Lando Calrissian and Luke to take lessons from Jedi master Yoda.

Review:

Less an autonomous story than a bridging episode in a serial, this nevertheless engaging entry in the cycle develops the characters a little more, adds a couple of running jokes concerning aborted Star Fleet commanders and abortive jumps to light speed, and tacks on a stunning revelation at the end, hoping no one will notice the absence of a resolution and be happy to wait a couple of years for the sequel rather than the following Saturday morning. An altogether darker film than its predecessor, it fleshes out the mythos of the Force as a path whose dark side is more seductive, if ultimately weaker, and it gives the flirtation between Han and Leia room to blossom. For these reasons it holds a special place in the affections of Star Wars fans everywhere!
