The Escort (1999)
(Mauvaise Passe)
Country: GB/FR
Technical: col 106m
Director: Michel Blanc
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Stuart Townsend, Liza Walker, Claire Skinner, Frances Barber, Keith Allen, Peter Mullan
Synopsis:
A Parisian university lecturer abandons his job, wife and son to live in London, where he daudles with the idea of writing a novel until a casual acquaintance introduces him to the world of the male escort. Initial gaucheness gives way to a certain facility as it becomes clear he has found the ideal role.
Review:
Taken to its conclusion, a depressing scenario indeed, since it reveals a man incapable of distinguishing work from relationships. The early scenes have much of the humour to be expected from the star of Tenue de Soirée, but later the tone becomes more mordant, the shift in focus away from the Auteuil-Townsend relationship not well managed. Some successes along the way, and certainly better than Half Moon Street.
