Fantasia 2000 (1999)
Country: US
Technical: col/IMAX 75m
Director: Pixote Hunt, Hendel Butoy, Eric Goldberg, James Algar, Francis Glebas, Gaëtan Brizzi, Don Hahn
Cast: animated
Synopsis:
A sequel to the 1940 classic designed for the showcase IMAX cinemas and retaining the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment from the original. The other items are: Beethoven's Fifth (1st Movt), Respighi Pines of Rome, Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 (1st Movt), Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals (last Movt), Elgar Pomp and Circumstance medley and Stravinsky Firebird Suite.
Review:
The animation is the blend of abstract and narrative as before, where the outrageously twee is mixed with the implacably evil. There are stunning images, particularly in the Respighi (whales) and Stravinsky (a volcano) episodes, but on the whole too many birds and butterflies. The best segment, however, is the Gershwin, which combines Avery-like humour with the draughtsmanship of a contemporary artist.
