Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Country: US
Technical: Rank/Super35 118m
Director: Terry Gilliam
Cast: Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire, Cameron Diaz, Gary Busey, Christina Ricci, Ellen Barkin
Synopsis:
In 1971 two journalists travel to Vegas to cover a motorcross rally and embark on a drugs binge while running up giant room service bills at the hotels they stay in.
Review:
Lip-smacking adaptation of a counter-culture classic, with Depp delivering an original performance of bandy-legged eccentricity and Del Toro spending most of the movie in a stupor. It is set against the unsettled time of the Vietnam war and takes an irreverent attitude to the society of consumerism epitomised by Vegas, of course. The posited alternative is to opt out of reality and responsibility altogether. Visually expansive as one would expect, it is a more or less funny picture depending on one's attitude to drug abuse, and not unlike an upmarket but scarier Withnail and I.
