Fear in the Night (1972)
Country: GB
Technical: col 94m
Director: Jimmy Sangster
Cast: Judy Geeson, Ralph Bates, Joan Collins, Peter Cushing
Synopsis:
A young bride recovering from a nervous breakdown is taken by her husband to her new home, a preparatory school in the Home Counties. There she is again attacked by a one-armed assailant, whom she identifies as the deranged Headmaster.
Review:
Yet another Hammer re-working of Les Diaboliques, this time with the roles shifted around. Sangster's direction is clunky in the extreme, and the wooden Bates is a clear contender for villainy to anyone versed in the studio's product; but it is the plot that fails to convince on any level, the most egregious being the presumed complicity of a deceived husband, and the explanation for the lack of a honeymoon being that Bates must return to school - during the holidays! Geeson sparkles like a freshly burnished jewel and was perhaps the pretext for this umpteenth remake, but she is not enough. Sample dialogue: (Collins, bearing a freshly shot rabbit to a horrified Geeson) 'I've brought you something for dinner.' (Geeson) 'Thank you, I'll put it in the fridge'.
