Final Portrait (2017)
Country: GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 90m
Director: Stanley Tucci
Cast: Geoffrey Rush, Armie Hammer, Tony Shalhoub, Sylvie Testud, Clémence Poésy
Synopsis:
American writer James Lord reminisces on how he once sat for a portrait with his artist friend, Alberto Giacometti, and how two or three sittings with this self-excoriating, free-spirited painter ultimately ran into weeks.
Review:
Unlike many artist-at-work films, this one has a lightness of touch that sets it apart, and makes it about so much more than just painting, or artistic creation. It is as if Giacometti's own dismissive attitude to his artistry has affected Tucci and his team, so that the constantly interrupted sessions are given less screen time than the sorties for drink, walking, free love, or just a ride in a car. In one scene, Rush devours two boiled eggs and tartines, two glasses of red and two cups of coffee in barely two minutes! The performances and jaunty music no doubt have something to do with it as well; all in all this gem of a movie has much of the insouciance of Tucci's debut, Big Night.
