First Blood (1982)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 94m
Director: Ted Kotcheff
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Brian Dennehy, Richard Crenna

Synopsis:

A Vietnam vet looking up an old buddy in Oregon is harassed by a smalltown police chief and ends up fighting a war of attrition against his persecutors in the nearby forests.

Review:

Film-making by numbers, 80s style; essentially a B-movie in all but name: minimal exposition, generic elements (the Western), two-dimensional characters, and exploitation drowning subtext. Set aside the objections that Rambo is just too sullenly silent and Dennehy's cop too touchy; such are the consequences of lack of backstory. Just relax and enjoy the hokum, competently enough assembled (though this has to be one of the most unattractively lit box office successes ever, in autumnal Rocky locations.) It provided Stallone with his other iconic role, not to mention three sequels (and counting).
