First Love (2019)
(Hatsukoi)
Country: JAP/ GB
Technical: col/2.39:1 108m
Director: Takashi Miike
Cast: Masataka Kubota, Sakurako Konishi, Shôta Sometani
Synopsis:
A boxer who has just learned he has a fatal brain tumour comes to the aid of a young sex slave/drug addict, and against all odds fights off her antagonists, which include not only her keepers but a Yakuza mob, the insider who has betrayed them, and a rival Chinese gang wrongly accused.
Review:
Sharp, stylish yakuza film with a True Romance lift to it. Nothing much that is new, but Miike's flair for comedy mayhem was rarely so lightly deployed, and the cast rise to the occasion.
