Force Majeure (2014)
(Turist)
Country: SV/FR/NOR/DK
Technical: col/2.35:1 120m
Director: Ruben _stlund
Cast: Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Kristofer Hivju
Synopsis:
A 2.2 Swedish family on a ski holiday in the French Alps enjoys a welcome break from the routine stresses of an upwardly mobile working life. One day, while lunching on the terrace, they witness a controlled avalanche and everything changes.
Review:
Formally incisive, wrily observed black comedy, exposing the soft underbelly of our safely ordered western lifestyle. In throwing into question with one stroke all the assumptions of a happily married mother of two, the film recalls such great 'family under pressure' thrillers as The Desperate Hours and Cape Fear, albeit with a very Scandinavian flavour: deadpan in its visual ironies, soul-baring in its scenes of personal drama. It is a sign of our times that the father's newfound emotional honesty manifests itself by his admission to his son that, yes, he does smoke!
