Four Lions (2010)
Country: GB/FR
Technical: col 97m
Director: Christopher Morris
Cast: Riz Ahmed, Nigel Lindsay, Arshar Ali, Kayvan Novak
Synopsis:
A quintet of would-be jihadists from northern England divides, some to go off and train in Afghanistan, the rest remaining to determine a suitable target for their homemade bombs.
Review:
This arresting black comedy yields some hollow laughs, and the idea is certainly funnier than the execution, but actually gets better as it becomes deadly serious. The dubious taste of making fun out of inept Pakistani terrorists who are not really sure what they are rebelling against delivers a decided edginess to the material, and pathos rubs cheek by jowl with absurdity.
