Technical: bw/1.37:1 91m
Director: Babak Jalali
Cast: Anaita Wali Zada, Gregg Turkington, Hilda Schmelling, Jeremy Allen White

Synopsis:

An Afghan military interpreter lives and works in California thanks to a U.S. government resettlement scheme, but although she enjoys her work at a fortune cookie factory she has trouble sleeping, and hankers after a loving relationship.

Review:

Whether or not it is the black and white, academy format and banal dialogue, or just the similarities to Paterson, this soul-nourishing portrait of émigré life was immediately plied with the epithet 'Jarmuschian'. Well, many would drink to that, especially as it is never predictable or dull, and leaves the viewer with a feeling of elation. The camera loves these ordinary human faces, and we hover over Wali Zada's bedtime insomnias with compassion and interest.
