The Favourite (2018)
Country: EIRE/GB/US
Technical: col 119m
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Cast: Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone
Synopsis:
The impoverished cousin of the Queen's favourite (and lover) arrives at Court as a scullery maid, and gradually surplants her cousin in the affections of the half-witted and gout-ridden monarch.
Review:
Claustrophobia (and animals) are clearly two of the preoccupations in this young director's work, but he seems finally to have found his niche with this wonderfully chilling chamber piece. A peculiarly pessimistic vision of human interaction (although the principal is driven by self-preservation, to be sure), wherein affections are given in the hope of a return on investment, and security, once gained, quickly leads to corruption. Ultimately she is trapped in a hell of her own making. The locations (Hatfield House in Hertfordshire) are splendidly caught, as are the frocks, wigs and live clay-pigeon shooting.
