The Fabelmans (2022)
Country: US/IND
Technical: col 151m
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle, Seth Rogen
Synopsis:
Young Sam Fabelman is taken to the pictures one Christmas and falls in love with making movies. As his father moves through various tech jobs, and his pianist mother pines for the family friend, Sam grows up in a parallel universe until he is asked to splice together a home movie of their camping trip.
Review:
Spielberg relishes putting his formative years on film for the first time, though we have glimpsed it through avatars over the decades. He avoids undue schmaltz and overt Jewish humour, and presents an affecting portrait of a close family unit sundered by love. The final third is a California high school narrative that cannot help but evoke Back to the Future. The crux of the film are the three edited movies he recreates: Western, War Movie, High School Movie. Here he (just about) resists the temptation to 'overcook' the visuals, though the synchronised music track is questionable...
