The Face (1958)
(The Magician, Ansiktet)
Country: SV
Technical: bw 100m
Director: Ingmar Bergman
Cast: Max Von Sydow, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand
Synopsis:
In the nineteenth century, a troupe of travelling magicians is challenged by the town authorities to produce a bona fide sample of their good faith, but they evade exposure as charlatans and instead turn the tables on their oppressors.
Review:
As in The Seventh Seal and Sawdust and Tinsel, one can see that Bergman's sympathies lie very much with the actor and the mystery, indeed the two are interrelated for him. Not an altogether satisfying film, but with masterly things in it.
