Hamlet (1964)
(Gamlet)
Country: USSR
Technical: bw/scope 140m
Director: Grigori Kozintsev
Cast: Innokenti Smoktunovsky, Mikhail Nazvanov, Elza Radzina
Synopsis:
Hamlet discovers his father's murder by his brother's hand, and is paralyzed by scruple over what to do about it.
Review:
The first of many egregious examples of world Shakespearean cinema: it might not sound the same, but the subtitles help a bit. The Hamlet/Gertrude relationship is particularly well carried; music (from state composer Dmitri Shostakovich) and direction are excellent as expected.
