Hana-Bi (1997)

£0.00

(Fireworks)

Country: JAP
Technical: col 103m
Director: Takeshi Kitano
Cast: 'Beat' Takeshi, Kayoko Kishimoto, Ren Osugi

Synopsis:

A cop whose longstanding partner is shot and crippled in a stakeout and whose wife is fading away with a terminal illness puts his life in order before committing suicide.

Review:

Kitano's first big international arthouse success, the film is again set in the milieu of the Yakuza and contains scenes of brutal violence, but also has moments of considered repose (featuring the director's own 'post near-fatal accident' paintings) and others of understated humour. An arresting puzzle of a film, slow but rewarding.
