Heat (1995)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 172m
Director: Michael Mann
Cast: Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Wes Studi, Natalie Portman
Synopsis:
A team of ruthless criminals finds its run of heists compromised when they use an outsider for a security van job. A game of cat and mouse ensues between their leader and the ex-marine police officer in charge of the case.
Review:
The director luxuriates in his stock in trade, devoting nearly three hours to the private and professional lives of lawman and villain, while demonstrating how little there is to choose between them. For all its length the script is taut, the plotting ingenious, and Mann achieves his best-looking film to date, thanks in no small part to the digital night-shooting of Dante Spinotti. At the same time he has a cast to die for, with De Niro in particular rarely better. Many will find its macho posturing a major irritant, but Western fans will love it to bits: seldom has the 'man's gotta do' dictum been so satisfactorily transposed to the urban thriller, Walter Hill take note.
