High Society (1956)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/Vistavision 107m
Director: Charles Walters
Cast: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Celeste Holm, John Lund, Louis Calhern

Synopsis:

With his former society wife about to remarry, songwriter, boat designer and sometime playboy C.K. Dexter-Haven has only forty-eight hours to win her back, with the help of a jazz band and a couple of reporters.

Review:

Upholstered remake of The Philadelphia Story, with music by Cole Porter. Most of its virtues are hangovers from Philip Barry's original play (the format, the quips); Porter's decidedly second rate songs hardly raise a cheer, except for Crosby's 'That's Jazz' number, and are shabbily incorporated into the action. Kelly is a fair replacement for Hepburn, but can't sing, while Crosby and Sinatra signally lack the comedic talents of Grant and Stewart; which brings us back to the songs, and Celeste Holm, by far the best thing in it.
