Country: US
Technical: col/scope 111m
Director: Martin Ritt
Cast: Paul Newman, Diane Cilento, Fredric March, Richard Boone, Barbara Rush, Martin Balsam

Synopsis:

The last stage out of a dead end town boasts a motley assortment of passengers, including an embezzler, an outlaw planning to steal his money and a white man brought up by Apache Indians who is shunned by the others. When the stage is held up, however, the passengers reluctantly accept that they depend upon the taciturn John Russell for their survival.

Review:

A typically downbeat sixties western reworking elements of Stagecoach and the Good Indian sub-genre and mixing them with a very contemporary breed of antihero and some civil rights inflected themes. Classic in many of its particulars - situations, pacing and structure - it is striking for its spare mise en scène and in-depth compositions. Based on a story by Elmore Leonard, it also features some superb dialogue for Newman, Cilento and Boone.
