Home from the Hill (1959)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 150m
Director: Vincente Minnelli
Cast: Robert Mitchum, George Hamilton, George Peppard, Eleanor Parker
Synopsis:
A philandering Texan oligarch wrests control of his son's upbringing from his possessive wife and begins to administer his education in what he considers masculine pursuits. His actions lead to the boy's involvement with a local girl and discovery of some family skeletons.
Review:
For a film in which everything hinges on sex and childbearing, this overcooked MGM melodrama has more euphemisms per page of dialogue than you would have thought possible, when any other studio would have been beginning to take a few more liberties. Apart from a fair boar hunt sequence, together with the classic allusions that entails, thoughtful decor and compositions, and an already assured and amiable Peppard to make it look natural, there is little to sustain interest over the film's length.
