House of Gucci (2021)
Country: US/CAN
Technical: col/2.39:1 158m
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Jack Huston, Salma Hayek
Synopsis:
The daughter of a haulage firm marries into the Gucci family, and presides over its gradual demise as a purveyor of high-end designer items - though not withstanding her best efforts!
Review:
A fascinating recreation of family archetypes and luxury living from the 80s and 90s, with at least one transformative performance from Jared Leto as the idiot of the family. Lady Gaga, however, commands the screen whenever she is present, even if she cannot single-handedly save the film from the twin evils of 'too much scope, too little detail' that bedevil its running time. Maurizio's sudden abandonment of Patrizia is too central an event to be left to the audience's inference, and having actors like Irons and Pacino play the patriarchs brings too much baggage to the enterprise.
