L'histoire d'Adèle H (1975)

(The Story of Adèle H)

Country: FR
Technical: col 98m
Director: François Truffaut
Cast: Isabelle Adjani, Bruce Robinson

Synopsis:

Victor Hugo's daughter pursues her love to England under an alias and in spite of his protestations that it is hopeless continues obsessively to pine for him.

Review:

The kind of obsessive tale that appealed to Truffaut's romanticism, and based on the diaries of Adèle, this is somewhat bleak and depressing, with the director hampered as in Fahrenheit 451 by the unfamiliarity of the language. A little more of the psychoanalytical touches of the nightmare sequences would have been welcome.
