The Hustler (1961)
Country: US
Technical: bw/scope 135m
Director: Robert Rossen
Cast: Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott, Piper Laurie
Synopsis:
A cocky pool shark takes on the legendary Minnesota Fats.
Review:
A memorable film, inevitably at its most striking in the pool-table scenes, it uses the 'domestic' scenes with an excellent Piper Laurie to soften the edges of Felson's character and remind him of the existence of other people - and other things outside pool. The economy and realism of the support from Scott and Gleason at times seems in danger of overshadowing Newman's career-defining moment here.
