The Horror of Frankenstein (1970)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col. 95m
Director: Jimmy Sangster
Cast: Ralph Bates, Kate O'Mara, Veronica Carlson, Dennis Price, Jon Finch

Synopsis:

Victor Frankenstein inherits his father's estate and leaves the university at Vienna to pursue his research at the castle. His fellow student and assistant ultimately finds the direction in which their experiments are tending to be beyond the bounds of scientific ethics, and becomes the first victim of the Baron's growing megalomania.

Review:

Sangster's lazily plotted reboot of the Frankenstein story goes back to basics, but so misjudges questions of tone that at times it seems closer to Carry On Screaming. Bates's Baron is a flippant egotist, devoid of charm, whose motives are obscure and whose anatomical approach to the project is akin to that of a child playing with a box of Lego. Instead of challenging his obvious insanity, the rest of the cast fall over each other to be accommodating, not least the Misses O'Mara and Carlson, décolletage suitably arranged for the apathetic Baron (and no doubt more appreciative sixties audience).
